Popcorn: The New Superfood in Town

Posted by Steven Bier on

Superfoods have seen a recent surge in popularity due to promotion by the media and their prescription by health experts in the recent past. Superfoods is a term that is used to refer to foods that contain a high content of antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients. Research has shown that these superfoods have the ability to lower the risk of contracting diseases like heart diseases, cancer and even improving physical and emotional health. They also regulate blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the blood.

Some well-known superfoods include salmon, broccoli, blueberries, green tea and spinach, but have you heard of popcorn as a superfood? Over the years, unhealthy preparation of popcorn such as in butter, like it is done in movie theatres, have damaged the reputation of the popular American classic and labeled it as a health hazard. Popcorn in its natural form, however, is full of satiating fibers that are not only overflowing in health but also leave you fuller for longer.

Recent studies by scientists have revealed that whole grain foods such as popcorn contain high levels of antioxidants. The levels of these antioxidants are almost similar to those found in fruits and vegetables. In particular, high levels of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant that occurs naturally in some foods, were found in these whole grain foods. These polyphenols are the ones responsible in helping reduce heart disease and cancer. There is a rich content of polyphenols in popcorn, which makes popcorn perfect for people seeking to add more superfoods to their diet.

Popcorn made at Popcorn for The People is made with whole grain non-GMO kernels and prepared with ingredients infused with classic and unconventional flavors that are guaranteed to leave you begging for more. Not only is the popcorn delicious, but it also carries a lot of health benefits (if you find us at a pop-up event, ask for our Plain popcorn--it is our healthiest type, as the popcorn has no other added ingredients). Moreover, all proceeds support employment of our largely ASD employee base and the mission of the organization. Every bag helps create more employment opportunities for people on the autism spectrum or with other developmental disabilities.
